I spent the 1970-71 school year as an exchange student in Germany. I took my interest in model airplanes with me, and immediately bought a glider kit to keep my skills sharp. The glider is towed to altitude by running with a very long string attached to a hook on the bottom of the fuselage. Once at altitude, the string drops off and pulls a little wedge with it that kept the rudder straight. With the wedge gone, the rudder is pulled right with a rubber band and the glider flies in a lazy right hand circle until it lands. I left the glider with my German "brother," Uli (below).
